About the subject | the choice of the reference photo
Sully Erna, the leader of the hard rock band Godsmack. But I believe everyone knows it for now, as I've already drawn him 3 times in last 6 months Why such a composition? I came across the photo on which is based the upper portrait, and quite liked it. Then, all of sudden, I started googling for some pictures which would match it. Creating it, I was highly inspired by scotty309's drawings, however, I decided to dust off my watercolours I had received from my friend in winter, and PAINT it "No rest for the wicked". Well... I browsed Godsmack's songs and thought the title of this song suits the best. Somehow.
About the drawing
I must confess it wasn't a piece of cake to do. It took me two months to complete, as I was busy with taking exams and, first of all, my moods were changing while painting this triple portrait. I was satisfied, but five minutes later I wanted to rip it into pieces! It really drove me nuts sometimes! I guess my patience with watercolours isn't so solid as it is when I draw with pencils I'm still not happy with the skin colour. It's too dark and differs in each figure. The forearm in the upper portrait is a disaster, especially the veins And the guitar was pain in the ass! At least I'm satisfied with it The guitar strings are also painted with brush, not some white gel pen trick or something Finished yesterday's night.
Hope you like my *serious* attempt at painting with watercolours. Thank you for the feedback in advance
I saw this and thought, "Why the fuck isn't this in my favorites?!" The watercolors look incredible. I honestly think it looks really good with the tattoos. Usually when I see Sully in black and white, his tattoos get blended into a mess, but with a bit of color, they look much better.
I am familiar with all three of these pictures (frequent "Sully Erna" Googlers, raise your hand...), and I think you did a great job capturing them. His facial expressions, namely on the top and bottom right pictures, are perfect. The only detail I would call into question is his left pointer finger in the bottom right picture. The curve looks off to me and the finger a bit thick, but I suppose it would be curved while playing guitar. Either way, this is incredible and is now in my favorites! Awesome job, and I hope to see more paintings from you in the future.
Hi, I apologize for such a late reply! Thank you very much! I'm pleased that you like this watercolour, as I'm still not used to painting with medium. Every attempt seems as if it was the first one. I agree with the mistake you've pointed out. Hands, especially fingers, have never been easy for me to draw.
I think there will be more Sully fan arts and more paintings, although maybe not in this compilation Many thanks again
woow, this looks awesome. And you done it with watercolors. Looks very realistic. I've tried watercolors, but i've never tried to do something look realistic. I should give it a try This looks amazing and I believe it drove you nuts. There're many details indeed. I saw your work on facebook also. And I love it. I cannot believe you made such progress in 9 years. Congrats
Thank you very much! I find painting with watercolours very tricky and I feel I will never learn how to use them. You see, this one turned not that bad, I like it. But my two last paintings, MUCH SIMPLIER than this to render, were a disaster. I can't paint a smooth background Anyway, don't listen to me and don't hesitate to try painting realistic, you may be successful You're Andela's ART, right? Nice to see you here
You're welcome. Yes, it's very tricky, I agree. You'll learn how to use them, don't worry Maybe you should focus on painting realistic with watercolors, like this. I'll definitely try to paint something realistic, though I started to use them because I got inspired with abstract paintings. Yes, that's my page.
